First things first, Happy Thanksgiving! We want to send you off with our blog post of the week to add some excitement to your holiday trip.
Makeup is probably one of the marvelous inventions in the human history. They make the impossible possible. For special occasions like engagement sessions and weddings, it is important to have a professional makeup artist to take care of your look so that you can enjoy a laid-back getting ready moment. Sharon Becker is one of the most creative and reliable makeup artists we have been working with for a long time. Many of you probably have known her and her work already, so let us get closer to her through this interview.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
We are SB Beauty, a boutique beauty-booking agency of makeup and hair artists who specialize in weddings and commercial/fashion photography and video. We have also keyed runway shows at NYFW and Bridal Market Week.
2. How did you get into the business?
After I had graduated from NYU with a BFA in Drama and a minor in Art History, I needed a job to support my acting. The math involved with waiting tables seemed too stressful (true story), so I applied for a holiday job at Macy’s. They placed me at the Prescriptives makeup counter, and I stayed there for four years (of course, I went home occasionally to sleep, shower, audition, etc.).
3. What do you love the most about your job?
This sounds crazy, but I love touching people. I feel that I can make in impact on how people feel about themselves, even if for just a moment. Touch and self-confidence are healing.
4. What sets you apart from other makeup artists?
I think I have a very keen sense of what people want for a precise moment, so I can craft a look to suit a particular person for a particular occasion. I really work with people. Oh, and I always make skin as beautiful and touchable as possible.
5. Who do you work best with?
Fun, smart, cool people, of course! I don’t particularly care if a woman loves makeup or not; I just like to connect with awesome people.
6. What tips can you give to couples who are planning their big day?
Great makeup is the perfect accompaniment to great photography, so if a couple is committed to a top-notch photography team like Andrea Fischman Photography, then they need to look their best for the cameras. These pictures will be treasured for the lifetime of marriage; classic choices and a seamless experience show up on the faces of those in front of the camera.
7. What advice would you give to aspiring makeup artists?
Work for a few years at a makeup counter to get a real feel for attending to all kinds of clients! You also get fantastic product training and can learn to network in the industry. It’s also an excellent way to build a client base and start your freelance life.
8. Can you tell us one of the greatest stories from working with your clients?
There are so many! Like, destination weddings in Tulum and Vermont, working on Richard Branson’s private island in the Caribbean, a photo shoot in Antigua… those are all awesome. The best, though, is hearing from a bride before she walks down the aisle that I’m an “emotionally responsive makeup artist,” meaning I can connect with my clients on an emotional level.
9. Some fun facts about you. Anything else you would like us to know.
I have to wear black for work. Otherwise, I dress in a riot of colors.
I love the beach; I think I’m a mermaid.
I have visited 9 of our 58 National Parks, so I have lots of travel ahead. I will make it 10 in summer of 2017. Alaska and American Samoa will be the ultimate!
